Many of you are familiar with classic fairy tales, either from reading them in story books, or from watching Disney versions on film; however, are you aware that many of these classic tales are not originals but adaptations?
Jacob and Wilhem Grimm were German brothers living in the 1800s. At the time, many of the fables and folklore were spoken orally. Determined to preserve these stories, the brothers Grimm began collecting these tales because they understood their power to enchant and entertain readers both young and old.
One major critique of fairy tales is that they are often seen as an unfortunate source of negative female stereotypes. Perhaps one can argue that when many of these fairy tales were written, a woman's role in society was much different than today. And because of the progress women have made, modern fairy tales should reflect this, right?
